Postdocs at Weill Cornell are asking for our help!
Weill Cornell’s postdoc union WCMPU-UAW has been bargaining with their university for over a year. After months of progress, Cornell is suddenly using the Trump administration’s efforts to cut research funding as an excuse to weaken their contract, adding the ability lay off postdocs with minimal notice and an article that would permit Weill Cornell to lower salaries during the life of the contract (click here for the full history in their bargaining tracker).
The proposed contract would force postdoctoral workers to bear the brunt of any future instability, reverting to the precarious positions that led postdocs to unionize in the first place. To show Cornell that their proposals are unacceptable, WCMPU is hosting a Picket to Protect Science this Wednesday (08/06) at 12 pm outside 1300 York Avenue, just a block away! Click here if you can come out and support our colleagues at WCM.
They are asking union siblings and supporters to show up and demonstrate with them. What happens at WCM will set a precedent that impacts researchers everywhere, especially those bargaining across the street (that’s us)! Strong turnout will signal to administrations across the city that researchers understand that these tumultuous times demand a fair contract with more protections, not fewer.
